wedding planning: my mom’s wedding

Karen & Paul, September 11, 2010

Fabulous. That is the word my mom used to describe her 2010 wedding. It is also how I told my guests to dress and my number one descriptive word. The apple does not fall far from the tree. My mom married her husband, Paul, September 11, 2010 at Margaux in Dallas, TX and it was fabulous.

emerson’s coat collection

Oh, I love collections.  Emerson’s coat collection is worth writing home about.  She has 24 coats of this leopard variation. I am at once an admirer and extremely envious.

showered

I named this post “showered” for a couple of reasons.  First of all, after a week of using face wipes and washcloths to “bathe” from the comfort of my couch, I finally showered.  I was/am sick and generally acting pathetic about it.  It had been so long, friends.  I think I scared my neighbors.  “Who is that hobo with the terriers?” is what I assumed they whispered as I trudged down the street in slippers and a robe and hair that appeared wet.  I actually went about two days without even donning a bra.  When I am sick, I am really gross.  The other reason for this title is I drove my sick self to Dallas for a wedding shower thrown by my Aunt Zita.  It was so lovely, with some really fabulous friends and family.  My aunt made delicious chicken pot pies (with hearts!) and cupcakes.  The day ended with my aunt and my cousin trying on her dress from her 1985 wedding!  Zita was strutting around, we all tried on the veil…it was so much fun. I really don’t have a lot of pictures from the shower yet, but there will be more to come! xo

Thank you all for the outpouring of supportive comments and emails after my dress fitting postVictoria sent me a message saying something along the lines of it being a little scary to hit that publish button.  She was absolutely right.  I was nervous, but I am determined to be myself here on this space I have created on the internet.  Ok, now go click on some fab links.

an early birthday gift…

… that I am just mad about.  So, I am a crazy-bad snoop.  If I didn’t consider my ability to sniff out a gift in a five mile radius or claw my way through packaging in mere seconds such a talent, I would be ashamed.  So, the fact that David just handed over a birthday gift unwittingly came as a very unexpected but pleasant surprise.  We have been receiving a ton of mail that is wedding related, so while standing in the kitchen David handed me a package and it was open in seconds, no letter-opener or scissors necessary.  I found a  gorgeous Kari Herer rabbit print in my hands and was beyond excited.  I love this print so much I now want an entire collection.  I have a weakness for flowers, antlers, and bunnies, so really I love every single print in her Etsy shop.  Oh, her wedding portfolio is seriously lovely.

i need you

I have been working with Erin of note-ably unique, “an express yourself online boutique” to create some cocktail napkins for the wedding.  We aren’t having a sit-down dinner, so Kristin, my amazing month and day-of coordinator, thought of creating some cute napkins to add another personal detail to our venue.  Luckily, I perused Etsy and happened upon note-ably unique.  I kinda just threw a bunch of scattered ideas at these sisters and asked for help! I didn’t want a stuffy monogram, but I was a little stumped.  The best idea I could think of was portraits of our dogs.  Lissy made me see the light on that one…

wedding planning: the dress fitting

Last week I opened up about some of my core issues on my guest post at VMac and Cheese.  The positive response was overwhelming, including gracious comments and heartfelt emails.  So ya’ll, this blog is about to get real.  And when I say real, I mean I am going to be honest and forthcoming with you.  If you have been following along with the Buckets and Bunches, you know I had to change my wedding date because of “life.” Life this year included hitting rock bottom with depression, anxiety, self-harm, and an eating disorder that I have been struggling with almost my entire life.  It was almost exactly a year ago when David made a call to my parents and they began staying with me while he traveled and together we started looking for a solution (again).  I lived in terror of the world and myself.  Looooong story short, I checked into an inpatient program near Philadelphia at the end of February and began a difficult journey to recovery.  I stayed in Philly for six weeks, spent another four weeks in a day program in Dallas, and finally returned to Houston for an Intensive Out Patient program focusing on dialectical behavior therapy.  And somewhere around the end of the summer, I began to see changes.  Or rather, I began to make changes. altitude house of cards

I have returned!  Altitude Design Summit was amazeballs.  I found the entire experience enlightening, delightful, smart and incredibly fabulous.  My roomies, Victoria and Molly, really made the conference complete.  Lovely, intelligent, and silly- these girls were exactly my cup of tea.  Oh, and not once during my time in Salt Lake did I receive a strange look about having a blog. Yeah!  I found my people.

weekend treat

louis vuitton animated short

Oh, this video is just, eh-hem, charming.  I know, I know, that pun was terribly painful.  Seriously, my dad is a pun master and they just come to me.  I put a great deal of brainpower into not spewing out every pun that comes to mind.  If you are still reading, thank you.  I stumbled across this new animated short, The Great Journey of Little Bagcharms, via The Style Caster.  Created to honor the release of their new balloon charm, the video is stylish, spunky, and best of all includes mountains of googly eyes.  This happy little 2 minute 40 second video gives the prefect little dose of creative fun to a very traditional brand.  Happy viewing and I hope you are having a great weekend.

on my way

Today I am on my way to Alt., or Altitude Design Summit in Salt Lake City.  I am looking forward to experiencing some winter, meeting fabulous bloggers, and learning so much more about the lifestyle and business of blogging.  I am not going to lie, I am a little nervous.  All the ladies (and gents) attending seem fabulous with larger than life personalities and I am nervous about the dinners, parties, and socializing.  On the other hand, I am over the moon excited!  Especially to meet my roomies, Victoria and Molly.  Speaking of Victoria, I am so thrilled to be over on VMac & Cheese today in her Behind the Scenes series.  Check it out! wedding planning: small glimpse

This past week I have been crazy busy wedding planning.  My original goal with this series was to really document the planning process so that it was a helpful resource.  In the next couple of weeks I am going to telling you the nitty gritty ins and outs of planning a wedding.  I am going to break it down and hammer time it for you!  Get excited people, it is going to be detailed.  For today, I have a little peek at our rings (they arrived from Macha and are completely fabulous), a detail from my wedding dress, two settings of rediscovered flatware that arrived in the mail as an early wedding gift, some cute details at BHLDN, gifts for my wedding party, and our fabulous invitations from Design by Bittersweet.

living for the weekend

What a weekend!  My mom and I cranked out wedding plans like nobody’s business… and then we had fun.  Michelle, Steve and Tyler headed over for a fabulous dinner planned by my mom.  There are no photos of the actual dinner, because we just devoured it.  While preparing brownie sundaes, Tyler discovered that filling raspberries with chocolate syrup is pretty much the best.  A raspberry snatching/hoarding/eating fest ensued.  Yum.  I think some kind of Nutella and raspberry concoction is in my future.  The evening wrapped up with a game of Cranium that Michelle, Steve and I rocked!  My mom headed home Sunday afternoon.  She will be missed by all, but I will comfort myself with leftovers. Um, yeah.  Did I mention she is an AMAZING cook?

I can’t wrap my mind around that fact that it is only Friday.  This week has been long.  Challenging, rewarding, and fairly busy.  My mom arrived in Houston yesterday and we are wedding planning galore!  Yesterday we went to La Mode Lingere to get everything I will need for under the wedding dress… I’ll tell you more about that next week, but I will say it went well. OH- AND our wedding rings arrived! Yay!  I cannot speak highly enough of Macha and I am a little obsessed and already plotting my next purchase…and my friend’s purchases…It might become an issue.  Today my mom and I are off for an early morning walk, a dress fitting, a fabulous dinner, Face Time with my sister, and other goodies.  Whew.  It is going to be amazing.  Have a great weekend, friends! xo

near and dear

I am dreaming about whisking me and Michelle off to The Cream next weekend.  From what I hear it is basically an amazing event hosted by Bash, Please that combines music, photography, design, vendors, and all wedding goodness into a night of dancing and fun. I am wondering if I can really return from Alt on Saturday and make it to Austin on Sunday.  Bri is giving away tickets over on Design Love Fest if you want to enter!  Doesn’t it look like fun?
