I was at home most of the week.  This spring has been seriously rough on my body.  Thoughts I have when I am home sick and David is out of town: pharmacies should have delivery service. There should be such a thing as a drive through convenience store, carrying Gatorade, Ben and Jerry’s, and pepto.  Houston should really have more delivery places.  There are only two places that deliver in my zip code- it’s just not right.  My dogs should learn to walk themselves, Dixie would hold the leashes, obviously, since Wally is a little bit of a wild cannon. The highlight of this time was HBO Go

mark shaw

These photographs by Mark Shaw for Vanity Fair in 1953 have me completely captivated. I love how he captured the curves of the women, the flow and grace of the garments. For the wedding my mom bought me a long flowing nightgown that I feel a little like a goddess in. These pictures remind me of the feeling I have when I am wearing it. These images are just completely lovely. I hope they inspire you are much today as they do me.

will you be my bridesmaid?

One of our lovely friends just got engaged and is looking for a cute way to ask her maids to join in on the the wedding festivities. There are so many cute ideas out there (see the links below) but I thought it would be cute for this gal to do something thematic. Right now she determined to get married in Napa, and I thought a little care package along the wine lines might be perfect.

necklace go-to

I was getting dressed Friday afternoon and I threw on my go-to necklace. It is a three strand, faceted glass bead necklace. I wear a lot of color and a lot of pattern, so this necklace can be the perfect finishing touch. It is neutral, but still such a statement. When I found it I had been looking for a Lucite bead necklace for a long time. It is a bit heavier than Lucite, but I love it just the same. If you ever come across a necklace with some kind of bead that is in the clear, neutral category, get it. It is such a staple.

Hello friends! This week was a little bit of a struggle for me.  A little sadness, a little stomach bug, and Wally pup has some kind of dog skin issue.  Oh, I also wiped out in front of Lupe Tortilla.  It was in front of about six men.  I held it together until I saw Michelle and I just started bawling. Then laughing.  And then that sloppy laugh/cry/snot fest that everyone loves to do as they order a beer.  I was moping around yesterday since I was confined to the house with tummy troubles, but I went outside to walk the dogs.  It was sunny, but enough breeze so that I didn’t melt, and I made yet another renewed decision to turn things around.  Tomorrow we are having a fashion show at work, and how could that not be amazeballs?  I want to see Hunger Games, obvi, and go out to brunch.  Number one goal is to feel better and get out of the house.  Also, cuddle my boo.  I am obviously referring to Wally. My sick pup.  I am looking forward to seeing David too.

events by kristin

Not wanting to be stressed on the day of my wedding, I set up an interview during a trip to Dallas with a wedding coordinator my DJ had suggested to me.  At our first meeting I recognized that Kristin was upbeat, organized, and super charming.  Events by Kristin, her company, does both wedding planning and wedding and event coordinating.  We hired Kristin as the month before and day-of coordinator, meaning that she would get me super-organized, coordinate all of the vendors, help with last minute details, and be familiar enough with me and our event that on the day of the wedding she could seamlessly take over.  And she did.  But she also did so much more.

swimming

I know that it isn’t summer quite yet, and that because I am in Houston, I am experiencing more heat than others, but nevertheless I have a couple of things to say about the pressures that come along with warm weather. Last April I had just come out of residential treatment in Philadelphia and the thought of returning to Texas, where I knew the temperatures were already near boiling, terrified me. The thought of wearing something sleeveless, or heaven forbid, a swimsuit, paralyzed me. I spent last summer in more layers than you can imagine. Leggings, tunics, and cardigans remained on my body even during August. There are so many fears that come along with baring your body. Even the fittest most gorgeous girls I know obsesses over their bodies when it comes to swimsuits. I have been known to completely avoid any activities where swimming or lounging in the heat is on the agenda. I nearly cancelled a trip David and I had with our great friends last fall because it was a beach vacation.

the gimmes: cartier love bracelet

On any given day you can find me struggling with a serious case of “the gimmes.” So, I have decided to document my material girl side in a series posts called, the gimmes. To start it off, the Cartier Love Bracelet.  So, I have had a love affair going with the Cartier Love Bracelet for a long time.  This fabulous Cartier commercial coupled with seeing the bracelets in person several times recently has reignited the flame.  Sigh, it is a big fat dream, but I love how they can look so classic or can be layered up for a little bit of a boho look.  Read more…

weekend recap

Hello friends! Did you go wild on Saturday?  This weekend we continued to forge away on the home-front.  We are not exactly wild these days, but these nesting weekends are rewarding and fun and we try and keep the silly factor up.  As it happens, de-cluttering really goes against every hoarding crazy bone in my body, but I am trying.  I think I threw away…exactly one magazine!  We did manage to stick to our newlywed cooking goal.  We made some yummy pesto, turkey and brie panini for lunch on Saturday.  Then, we attempted ribs.  It was, um, a miss.  The broccoli we made to go with it actually tasted like our cooking method had been to marinate the veggies in old kitchen sink water.  The ribs turned out to be really fatty and so incredibly spicy we had to wipe our noses while eating.  To continue our cooking saga, our rotisserie broke half-way though cooking our chicken on Sunday, leaving one side completely raw and the other completely black.  The cooking was not exactly our shining achievement. David let me sleep in on Sunday, which was lovely.  I literally woke up, ate the breakfast equivalent of heaven (chocolate chip waffles, bacon and milk), and went back to sleep. Seriously. Hmm.. fabulous.  I would love to hear about your weekend! xo Read more…

Well, I am sure many of you are preparing for St. Patrick’s Day.  I am not.  If you love it, I am happy for you.  If you are an old lady curmudgeon like me, I totes get it.  I tried to get into St. Paddy’s Day.  March 2007, I bundled up and headed out to the bars and streets of Boston with girlfriends.  We danced, we had fun, and then we trudged home in a simply lovely mixture of vomit and ice and I was over that green holiday. And ya’ll, I look good in green.  Anyways, David and I  are going to try and go on a real date at an actual restaurant.  We haven’t done that is a LONG time. All you Houston residents, I need recommendations.  It can be fancy or not, as long as the food is good.  Here are a few fab links for the week: Read more…

rainbow brights

Everyday for the past week I have wanted to kick off my shoes and relax with a beer.  It is hot here.  It feels like summer in Texas… temperatures are in the mid-eighties, the days are longer, mosquitoes are a buzzin.’  I actually am not a huge fan of the heat, or the sun.  I am actually not a vampire, as my description might imply, but instead a slightly moody very pale girl.  Something I can get on board with is mixing brights and pastels…and all of the colors in the rainbow.  This post is inspired by the colors of summertime and carefree clothes. game. changer.

This is such a game changer.  Do you guys bake?  I actually did a brief stint in culinary school, in the pastry and baking department.  I have cysts in my hands, so my career as a pastry chef was rather short lived, and now I marvel at how I used to wake up at 3 am for work, but I still love to bake for David and friends when I am feeling domestic.  When I saw this cake slicer I got so excited. Cutting even layers is always challenging, and this looks neat. Yeah, I said neat. Read more…
