The Homesick Texan Cookbook by Lisa Fain www.bos-bowl.com

I have been the laziest cook over the past few years. I have been know to say that making a list of ingredients overwhelms me, not to mention the shopping. The fact that David had mad skills on the grill hasn’t motivated me. However, I love family gatherings. Holidays, last minute dinners, weekend long reunions… My mom and aunt are excellent hostesses and a big part of it is the fantastic food. As we finish eating meals together, we reminisce about other delicious foodie times and start planning the next spread. I mean, my great grandmother owned a bakery, my aunt is a caterer, and my uncle makes crazy delicious ribs that will convert you on site. I brag about my mom’s cooking to anyone who will listen. Add a bunch of kitchen loot from getting married and I felt determined to learn to cook. Really cook. When I have kids I want them to bring their friends around just to try my food. Since I’ve been in Dallas all summer, my mom has been giving me lessons. We have been testing new recipes and perfecting old ones. It has been fun and inspiring. This weekend we tried the Pasilla Garlic Shrimp and Tomatillo Cheese Grits from The Homesick Texan cookbook…

I got this cookbook from my friend, Kristin, as a shower gift and am obsessed with it. Both dishes were fabulous, southern, comforting, and a little spicy. Amaze. Um, food photography is no joke! It is not easy…so, yeah. Here are a couple of our pics. xo

  1. This looks delicious, even if food photography can immediately make you want to bang your head against the wall. I’ve been a lacking cook lately myself, but I’m looking forward to making something real tonight (read: not eggs and toast)!

  2. It looks yummy. I had not heard of that cookbook before. I will keep it in mind. I love cooking but usually during the summer with a more relaxed schedule I have a hard time planning meals. But have started a food journal to plan the meals for the week and the shopping list to go with it. Its working so far this week!
