gift guides the dapper dork

gift guide 2012: for the dapper dork

Good Tuesday morning to you all. Today the B&B gift guides continue with the husband, David. He is a self proclaimed dapper dork, obsessed with Mad Men and technology.

David can research the latest products obsessively online, all while dressed like he is ready for me to hand him an old-fashioned. That never happens, though, sadly for him. I am just not that kind of lady. If you are struggling with finding gifts for your man… well, this may or may not help. I can assure you that if you read his write ups, you WILL be entertained. xo

The Dapper Dork

Listen up here, ladies. I’m going to let you in on a really big secret; I am a dork. Yes, that’s right. I am a socially awkward, computer loving, puzzle obsessed, dork of a man. But that doesn’t preclude me from being able to have a sense of style. And if there is a gent in your life that fits the dork profile, but hasn’t hit his dapper stride, then this gift guide might be for you!

Working For The Man

In my day job, I work as a consultant. My typical Monday starts with getting on a plane at 6 in the morning, landing God knows where a few hours later, check emails, make a few spreadsheets, deliver a presentation, then go out dinner, and finally hit my hotel bed around 9 in the evening. This means I need to have a very versatile outfit.

I tend to rely on a few layers since I’m typically going from the ever-warm Texas area to somewhere with a little more variety in the seasons; this means I can adjust to however much I happen to be sweating at the time. I’m also a big fan of simple lightweight solid sweaters over a more interesting patterned button up. The other piece of advice I’d give is to always go with the slim or tailored fit clothing. Even a portly gentleman, such as me, looks better in an extra large cut slim, without the extra fabric billowing everywhere. And finally, please invest in a good pair of shoes, with a more classic rounded toe; believe me, people will notice.

  1. Würkin Stiffs Magnet Collar Stays

This miracle devices keep your collar from flaring out 70’s style; and they’re freakin magnets!

  2. Nokia Lumia 920

Forget the iPhone; this is the best phone on the market. Especially if you don’t want to look like everyone else.

  3. Nokia Purity In Ear Headphones

Some slick headphones with inline controls and a microphone for that sleek 920.

  4. Allen Edmond’s Strand – Black

One of the most beautiful shoes ever crafted; these will set you back some hard earned cash, but they will be worth it!

  5. Banana Republic Silk/cotton/cashmere V-Neck Sweater

A light, well fitting layer is a simple look, but maybe choose a bolder color to turn up the intensity.

  6. Banana Republic Slim Fit Non Iron Textured Check Shirt

You could go for a solid light colored shirt here, but like I said before, here’s your chance to go for broke with an interesting pattern.

  7. Banana Republic Vintage Straight Grey Wool Notch-Waist Trouser

I really like the fit of these pants; they’re slim enough, without feeling like you are rocking the man version of a camel toe. Plus they have a really great detail in the fabric.

  8. Jack Spade Tech Oxford Briefcase

This amazing looking briefcase is durable, using some high tech finishing on the outside, but is also a traveler’s dream, with a zip down laptop compartment.

Casual Night Out

I specifically put casual, because as a dork, I’m not one for the all night bender at the 40/40 Club. No… I’d rather cook something out in the backyard on the grill, and pretend to complain about having to watch some chick flick (while secretly wondering who Bella was going to choose!). Or if I’m going out, I’m thinking a small group of no more than 5, to a bar, dinner, and movie, in whatever order strikes my fancy.

So with that in mind, my go-to uniform includes some dark-wash jeans, with a button down and another sweater layer (noticing a pattern here?). Since the weather is chillier outside, at least for Texas, let’s pair that with some boots. Then we’ll throw in some casual geek accessories, and stick a fork in this gift guide!

  1. Levi’s 513

Like I said, some simple dark wash jeans in a slim fit; but not skinny! Unless your man is really just a 13 year old boy…

  2. J Crew Secret Wash shirt in faded gingham

I’m a huge fan of gingham; I don’t know what the right season is for wearing gingham, but I choose to wear it anytime.

  3. J Crew Slim Slub Merino Cardigan

Taking a simple layer, like a cardigan, but finding one with an interesting detail, like these elbow patches, is always a great idea.

  4. Allen Edmond’s Dalton – Walnut Burnished Calfskin

Like before, I recommend splurging when it comes to shoes; and these are some handsome boots to splurge on.

  5. Microsoft Surface

For geeking out with a sleek interface, while watching movies and playing games.

  6. Nest Learning Thermostat

Since I insist on wearing sweaters, even when it’s hot outside in a Texas winter, this smart thermostat is perfect a sweaty dork like me!

  1. Love the gift guides! I’m so excited to check every day. J really is a dapper dork. What a great way to put it. I’ve got my hands full with a not-so-dapper dork – I’ll take all the help I can get. How about a “Christmas for the Unfashionable Man” guide?? ;) I’ll be back tomorrow for more goodness. xoxo

  5. I love that you have such style, David! My husband wears his uniform to work, and jeans and a tee around the house…I want to get him more clothes, but he won’t let me! hehe

    • I’d love to see him stop you from sticking them in his closet! Besides, I definitely have my hobo uniform too; I seem to be wearing it less and less, but only because I suspect Chelsea is throwing away one pair of basketball shorts every week or so…

  6. Love these gift guides! In the years since I hooked my Dallas dude, I like to think I’ve made him quite the Dapper Dork! But he’s still the one mixing and delivering the old fashioneds at the end of the day…

    • To be clear, I envision myself nursing an old fashioned, but the truth is that I have the drinking pallet of an 18 year old girl… So it’s apple-tini’s for me!

  7. i’ll take the cashmere v-neck and the elbow patch cardigan in every color, please. you know…for Dago…
